Our Middle/High School program offers a continuum of diverse learning environments and placements for each student's individual needs. From highly structured self-contained ABA classrooms to more traditional settings of our ERI program, we create a supportive atmosphere that fosters growth and achievement. Our ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills and confidence necessary to transition to less restrictive environments as well as to prepare for adulthood.
Lodi Campus Programs
Applied Behavior Analysis Program
Our ABA program offers self-contained classrooms that provide intensive instruction and focused training in daily living skills and pre-academic skills. Students’ goals are developed and monitored based on the Central Reach Assessments, which includes the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS-R) and the Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS). These classrooms use a variety of communication modalities to support students’ individual needs, and sensory integration is incorporated into daily activities.
Multiple Disabilities Program
Our MD program offers a functional academic curriculum focused on practical reading, language arts, and math skills, emphasizing the development of independent living skills to prepare students for life in the community. Students may receive additional support through vocational training, career planning, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social skills groups, and emotional development programs.
Emotional Regulation Impairment Program
Our ERI program offers a traditional academic curriculum emphasizing core subjects like language arts, reading, math, science, and social studies. This approach prepares students for high school graduation, transition back to the student’s home district, and future success. To foster well-rounded individuals, we incorporate arts education, including music, art, and technology. Additionally, we offer specialized programs tailored to each student's needs, such as community-based instruction and career readiness training.
Core Academics Areas
English Language Arts
Our English Language Arts courses are tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. Students who are reading at or near grade level may delve into the exploration of literature, while others may focus on building foundational reading skills, such as word structure and sight word recognition.
Our dedicated staff follow a structured scope and sequence to improve students' written communication skills. SBJC students learn to conduct research, organize their thoughts, and write compelling narratives, paragraphs, and essays. To support their writing process, students are introduced to assistive technology, outline development, and graphic organizers, empowering them to find the strategies that best suit their individual learning styles.
Math
Our math courses are focused on the individual student’s needs. We know that some students may excel in mathematics and thrive in our small group instruction, allowing them to work at their individual pace and delve deeper into mathematical concepts Other students may face challenges in mathematics due to certain barriers, numerical difficulties, or spatial processing issues, and these students are instructed in various ways for them to grasp concepts that will prove functional in their post-scholastic life. Specific goals and objectives are developed for each student in this core subject.
All SBJC students benefit from our program's focus on building essential organizational and executive function skills through systematic and explicit instruction. Our mathematics program emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and the real-world application of mathematical concepts, moving beyond rote memorization. Our staff utilize multisensory methods and engage students in open-ended tasks and real-world problems, preparing them for complex mathematical challenges.

Science
By exploring the natural world, students develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, instilling a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery. To engage students with the material, we employ a variety of teaching methods, including textbooks, hands-on experiments, multisensory activities, and field trips. Science education focuses on developing students into independent learners capable of analyzing and organizing complex scientific information. Teachers provide scaffolded instruction to equip students with the skills necessary to dissect scientific content.
Social Studies
Our social studies courses cultivate informed and engaged citizens by teaching students about the past, present, and future. By exploring democratic principles and civic responsibilities, we empower students to become active participants in shaping their world.Social Studies classes are taught in homeroom groups to prepare students for the larger high school setting. To engage students with the material, we utilize textbooks, multisensory activities, and field trips. Social Studies education fosters the development of independent learners who can analyze and organize complex historical and cultural information. Our staff provides scaffolded instruction to equip students with the skills necessary to analyze social studies content.
Physical Education
SBJC students are required to take Physical Education or Health courses throughout their entire academic journey, up to and including their 12th grade year. Our comprehensive Physical Education curriculum is designed to foster holistic development, encompassing both physical and social skills. As students progress through middle and high school, the emphasis shifts to developing cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility. PE lessons are designed to enhance hand-eye coordination, body movement, agility, and spatial awareness.
Beyond physical fitness, PE plays a crucial role in developing social skills and character traits. Students learn the importance of teamwork, cooperation, and respect for others, both on and off the playing field. They are encouraged to celebrate individual achievements while also recognizing the value of collective effort.
In addition to physical education, students in Health courses delve into vital wellness topics such as nutrition, personal hygiene, and the human body systems. By integrating these elements into our curriculum, we aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices about their health and well-being.
Music
SBJC students are immersed in the world of music for a half-year period throughout their academic journey, up to the 11th grade. Our dedicated music room serves as a vibrant hub where students of all skill levels can explore, experiment, and create music across diverse genres and historical periods.
The music curriculum is designed to ignite creativity and a deep understanding of fundamental musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics. Through hands-on experiences, students have the opportunity to compose their own music and bring their artistic visions to life. Our dynamic learning environment encourages students to move, express themselves, and connect music to other subjects through engaging cross-curricular projects and activities. Each year, we showcase the talents of our students during seasonal school assemblies and graduation ceremonies, providing a platform for them to share their musical gifts with the school community.
Art
SBJC students are immersed in the world of art for a half-year course throughout each grade of their academic journey, up to the 11th grade. Our art curriculum is designed to ignite creativity and foster a deep appreciation for visual expression. Students explore diverse cultures and artistic styles, broadening their perspectives and expanding their creative horizons.
In addition to mastering foundational skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture, students delve into the fundamental elements of art, including line, shape, color, and texture. Our art classes provide a unique space for experimentation, encouraging students to think critically, solve problems, and develop their individual artistic voice. As students progress, they are exposed to a variety of materials, honing their technical skills and refining their artistic techniques.
Technology
Our half-year Technology course is designed to equip students with the essential digital skills they need to succeed in today's interconnected world. Through instruction individualized for each of our learners, students are provided the opportunity to navigate a variety of devices, programs, and online platforms.
Fundamental Skills: We lay the foundation for future success by teaching essential skills based on each child's needs. Some students might work towards mastering touch typing, while other students might practice using their augmentative/alternative communication devices to express.
Practical Applications: Our hands-on projects incorporate STEAM learning into the classroom utilizing activities that bring technology to life. Students will code robots to solve challenges and design posters using Google Workspace among other interactive activities that foster their critical thinking, problem-solving skills and creativity. These skills prepare students to tackle complex real-world challenges and excel in future careers across various industries.
Digital Citizenship: We emphasize the importance of responsible and ethical technology use. Students learn to engage safely and respectfully in online communities, protecting their digital footprint and fostering positive online interactions.
Through these experiences, students develop a deep understanding of how technology can enhance their learning and empower them to become creative problem-solvers. Our goal is for students to embrace technology and prepare students to be confident and responsible digital citizens.
SBJC-Designed Courses
Introduction to ASL
This course is a beginner-level class that teaches the fundamental elements of American Sign Language (ASL), including the manual alphabet, basic vocabulary for greetings, numbers, colors, family members, simple questions, and essential grammatical structures, allowing students to start communicating in ASL.
Life Skills/Community Participation Course
This course is designed to equip students with the essential life skills and knowledge needed to transition successfully into adulthood and participate fully in their communities. The Life Centered Education (LCE) Curriculum will be utilized to develop key competencies in three primary domains:
Daily Living Skills: Students will acquire practical skills for independent living, including budgeting, cooking, cleaning, personal care, and time management.
Self-Determination and Interpersonal Skills: The course will focus on developing self-confidence, decision-making skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication to build strong relationships.
Employment Skills: Students will explore career options, learn job-seeking strategies, develop workplace skills, and gain practical work experience through internships or job placements.
By the end of this course, students will be better prepared to live independently, pursue their career goals, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Career Exploration
This course, developed using the James Stanfield transitions curriculum, is designed to empower students with the essential skills for career success and independent living. Through engaging activities and real-world experiences, students will delve into personal management, career management, and life management.
The course will guide students in discovering their unique strengths, setting achievable career goals, and developing effective communication skills. Additionally, students will learn about the importance of lifelong learning, the value of work ethic, and the responsibilities of being a productive member of society. By the end of this course, students will be well-prepared to make informed career choices, pursue higher education, and lead fulfilling lives.
Personal Growth and Development: Financial Literacy
This course is designed to equip students with the essential financial knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions and achieve financial stability. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students will explore various aspects of personal finance, including budgeting, saving, investing, credit, and consumer protection.
By the end of this course, students will be able to create and manage personal budgets, understand the impact of financial decisions, and develop strategies for achieving long-term financial goals. They will also learn how to protect themselves from fraud, make wise consumer choices, and navigate the complexities of the financial world.
Personal Growth and Development: Social Skills
This course, designed for middle and high school students, utilizes the TeachTown curriculum to equip them with the essential social skills needed to succeed in various settings. Through engaging activities and interactive lessons, students will explore key areas like following rules, building healthy relationships, and effective communication.
The program focuses on developing self-awareness, managing emotions, and resolving conflicts constructively. Students will learn to interact positively with peers and adults, fostering strong friendships and building a sense of community responsibility. By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to navigate social situations with confidence and respect.
